NOTES
Additional Information: LOCATED BEHIND THE HOME AT 187 MAIN STREET, THIS TWO STORY STONE STRUCTURE IS CHARACTERIZED BY PROMINENT LINTELS OVER RECTANGULAR OPENIGNS AND A METAL ROOF. BUILT IN C. 1885 (SEE BIB. REF. A), THIS FORMER SMOKEHOUSE IS SIDE GABLED IN STYLE AND RECTANGULAR IN ITS PLAN CONFIGURATION. IT FEATURES A GABLE ROOF AND A CUT-STONE EXTERIOR. RECENTLY IT HAS BEEN USED AS A GARAGE AND A STORAGE AREA. PRIOR TO ITS SCHEDULED DEMOLISION, WHICH WAS TO HAVE TAKEN PLACE IN 7/1995, THIS BUILDING WAS CONSIDERED TO BE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: THIS HISTORIC CAR TOUR OF POTOSI TOWNSHIP DESCRIBES THIS STONE BUILDING AS A SMOKEHOUSE BUILT IN C. 1855 BY CELESTIN KALTENBACK, A PROMINENT POTOSI RESIDENT AND THE COMMUNITY'S FIRST POSTMASTER. THE MEAT CURED BY KALTENBACK WAS USED FOR "LOCAL CONSUMPTION AND FOR SALE TO ST. LOUIS AND OTHER MARKETS." (SEE BIB. REF. A). THE KALTENBACH HOME IS LOCATED JUST NORTH AT 188 MAIN STREET, 5/5.
