NOTES
Additional Information: TWO IDENTICAL BUILDINGS DISTINGUISHED BY BRICKWORK AT THE CORNICE LINE AND RECTANTGULAR OPENIGNS DEMARKED BY STONE LINTELS AND SILLS. METAL COLUMNS (AT THE STOREFRONT LEVEL) FURTHER CHARACTERIZE 126 S. MADISON STREET. CARRARA GLASS IS FEATURED ON THE NEIGHBORING STOREFRONT. EACH STANDING TWO STORIES TALL, THE BUILDINGS HAVE A RECTANGULAR PLAN CONFIGURATION AND A FLAT ROOF. THE STRUCTURES ARE IN GOOD CONDITION. BOTH BUILDINGS WERE CONSTRUCTED IN THE SAME YEAR, 1868. (A).

THE EARLIEST OCCUPANTS OF THESE BUILDINGS WERE THE FOLLOWING: AT 126 S. MADISON STREET, A HARDWARE STORE CONDUCTED BUSINESS FROM 1868 TO C. 1927. (A,D). AT 132 S. MADISON STREET, A BOOTS AND SHOES STORE EXISTED FROM C. 1894 TO C. 1927. (D) TODAY, PATTERSON'S SHOE OUTLET, WHICH IS PART OF LANCASTER'S INTERIORS OCCUPIES THE BUILDING.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:

ESTABLISHED IN 1850, THE M. M. ZIEGLER HARDWARE STORE, LOCATED AT 126 SOUTH MADISON STREET, WAS AMONG LANCASTER'S MOST ENDURING COMMERCIAL VENTURES. ZIEGLER, A PENNSYLVANIA-BORN CITIZEN, OPENED THE COMMUNITY'S FIRST HARDWARE AND TIN SHOP IN A BUILDING ON THE SQUARE'S NORTHEAST CORNER (NO LONGER STANDING). THE BUSINESS GREW STEADILY AND AT ONE POINT A BRANCH STORE WAS OPENED IN PRAIRIE DU CHIEN. THE ZIEGLER FIRM WENT THROUGH A NUMBER OF NAME CHANGES (ZIEGLER & DODGE, ZIEGLER & DILLON) AS PARTNERSHIPS WERE ORGANIZED. IN 1882, ZIEGLER'S SON WILLIAM BECAME A PARTNER AND THE NAME BECAME M. M. ZIEGLER & SON (A,B,C). THE 1898 CITY DIRECTORY LISTS THE BUSINESS AS ZIEGLER BROS. (E)

THE COMMERCIAL BLOCK ADJACENT TO ZIEGLER'S (132 S. MADISON STREET) HOUSED A BUSINESS SPECIALIZING IN BOOTS AND SHOES FROM C. 1894 TO. C. 1927. (D)

2005-
both buildings still have their original three-bay-wide second stories, and both are crowned with identical corbelled brick cornices.
