THIS TWO STORY BUILDING IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, ACCORDING TO THE INTENSIVE SURVEY. THE COMMERICAL BUILDING HAS A RECTANGULAR PLAN CONFIGURATION AND A FLAT ROOF SHAPE. THE COMMERICAL OR INDUSTRIAL HISTORICAL USE (SOURCE) IS AS A PARKING STRUCTURE, CIRCA 1927. (B) THE DATE OF CONSTRUCTION IS 1900-1901. (D) HISTORICAL STATEMENT: ACCORDING TO THE SANBORN PERRIS MAPS, THE CONSTRUCTION OF THIS BUILDING WAS CONTEMPLATED AS EARLY AS 1899 FOR THE MAP DISTRIBUTED IN THAT YEAR INCLUDED THE STRUCTURE BUT ADDED THAT THE INFORMATION WAS "FROM PLANS." IN 1905, THE BUILDING WAS LISTED AS "UNFINNESHED" AND IN 1912 AS VACANT. THE METAL FACADE, WHICH DISTINGUISHES THE BUILDING ARCHITECTURALLY, IS NOTED ON THE 1912 MAP. IN 1927, THE STRUCTURE WAS USED AS A GARAGE WITH A CAPACITY OF SIX CARS; A MEETING HALL OCCUPIED THE BUILDING'S SECOND FLOOR. (B) A mechanic by trade, in his spare time Ed played the trumpet in the Lancaster City Band. "At 217 West Cherry Street is the Hyde Building. Constructed by Ed Hyde between 1901 and 1905, its most distinctive feature is its second-story stamped sheet metal facade, popular around the turn-of-the-century. Done in the neoclassical style, the facade is complete with lions' heads, cherubs, and a frieze with garland wreaths. A mechanic by trade, in his spare time Ed played trumpet in the Lancaster City Band." Lancaster's Historic Courthouse Square |
