Additional Information: THE IVEY RESIDENCE FEATURES TWO STORIES, A HIPPED ROOF WITH A DECK, EAVE-LINE BRACKETS, CORNER PILASTERS, AND PROMINENT WINDOW MOLDINGS. THE PORCH IS NOW ENCLOSED, THE TRANSOM AND THE LIGHTS ARE COVERED. ACCORDING TO THE SURVEY REPORT THE BUILDING WAS FOUND TO BE IN GOOD CONDITION.

HISTORICAL STATEMENT:
A NATIVE OF CORNWALL, ENGLAND, ALEXANDER IVEY SETTLED IN GRANT COUNTY IN 1846 AND WORKED AS A MINER UNTIL 1861 WHEN HE ENLISTED IN WISCONSIN'S SEVENTH INFANTRY. FOLLOWING THE WAR, HE OPENED A MARCANTILE ESTABLISHMENT AT BRITISH HOLLOW (AN UNINCORPORATED SETTLEMENT NEAR POTOSI) WITH A MR. WILSON. IN 1868, IVEY ACQUIRED WILSON'S INTEREST AND CONTINUED THE BUSINESS INDEPENDENTLY UNTIL 1870 WHEN WILLIAM E. WEBB BECAME A PARTNER. IN 1879, IVEY AND WEBB MOVED THEIR STORE TO LANCASTER AND OPENED IN THE BUILDING LOCATED AT 131 WEST MAPLE STREET, (47/32). (C).
AT THE TIME OF CONSTRUCTION, THE IVEY RESIDENCE CONSISTED OF A TWO-STORY BLOCK AND A SINGLE-STORY WING; AT SOME LATER DATE, A SECOND STORY WAS ADDED TO THE WING. (A).
