Additional Information: | A TWO-STORY BRICK VERNACULAR SQUARE HOUSE OF ITALIANATE INFLUENCE THAT HAS A PLAIN CORNICE TRIMMED LOW HIP TERNEPLATE ROOF. SEGMENTED BRICK ARCHES OVER THE SHUTTERED WINDOWS AND THE SIDE LIGHTED ENTRANCE WITH TRANSOM THAT IS PLACED AT THE SOUTH END OF THE FRONT FACADE ACCENT THIS ASYMETRICAL HOUSE. A FULL LENGTH BRACKETED SPINDLE AND BALUSTRADED PORCH SUPPORTED BY TURNED POSTS WITH DECORATIVE CAPITALS ADDED TO THE ORIGINAL STRUCTURE, (C), DOMINATES THE FRONT OF THE HOUSE, WHILE A LESS DECORATIVE SMALL SIDE PORCH (ALSO ADDED) AND A LONG SIDE PORCH SUPPORTED BY TURNED POSTS THAT SERVES THE FRAME ADDITION AT THE REAR ADDS CHARACTER TO THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE HOUSE. ONE OF FOUR BRICK HOUSES OF NOTE IN HAZEL GREEN, THIS SMALLER HOUSE IS ARCHITECTURALLY SIGNIFICANT AS A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE MORE MODEST 19TH CENTURY BRICK DOMESTIC ARCHITECTURE THAT REMAINS IN ITS ORIGINAL STATE. FORMER OWNERS OF THE HOUSE INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING PEOPLE: J. WILLIAMS IN 1870, J. CROSBY IN 1877, AND THE CHANDLER SISTERS IN 1922. (B) THE CURRENT OWNER AS OF 1982 IS THE SCHOOL DISTIRCT OF HAZEL GREEN, ACCORDING TO THE INTENSIVE SURVEY REPORT. THE HOUSE WAS BELIVED TO HAVE BEEN BUILT FROM 1868 TO 1870. A PORCH WAS ADDED LATER. 2020 - Resurveyed. The 1868 Italianate-style Williams-Chandler House is located at the northwest corner of the intersection of S. Percival Street and 18th Street and faces east toward S. Percival Street. The two-story, brick house has a hipped, standing seam metal roof with wide overhanging eaves. Based on a 1982 survey photograph, there was a one-story, hip roofed porch on the façade and a small, flat-roofed porch that sheltered a secondary entrance on the south (side) elevation. Since that time, the side porch has been removed and the front porch extended along the south elevation. The porch is supported by turned columns and finished with a turned post balustrade, simple decorative brackets, and a spindlework frieze. The asymmetrical façade contains an entry door flanked by pilasters and slender multi-light sidelights and topped with a linear transom. Two one-over-one vinyl sash windows are north of the door and three six-over-six vinyl sash windows with segmental brick arches span the second story. The north and south elevations contain windows similar to those on the façade. A brick chimney rises from the north slope of the roof and two rear-gabled additions extend from the west (rear) elevation. |
