NOTES
Additional Information:ARCHITECTURAL STATEMENT: A FRAME CHURCH STRUCTURE, 30'x 40' WITH A SLOPING ROOF ON AN ELEVATED FOUNDATION THAT HAS LONG ROUND ARCHED WINDOWS. (B). TWO ENTRANCE DOORS WITH ROUND ARCH TRANSOM WINDOWS ABOVE ARE SYMMETRICALLY LOCATED ON EITHER SIDE OF THE FACADE. A ROUND OCCULAS ACCENTS THE SIMPLE OPEN GABLE FRONT. ORIGINALLY, THE CHURCH STRUCTURE HAD AN OPEN WOODEN BELFRY, WHICH HAS SINCE BEEN REMOVED. (A) HISTORICAL STATEMENT: THE PRIMITIVE METHODIST CHURCH IS HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT FOR ITS ROLE IN THE SOCIAL AND RELIGIOUS DEVELOPMENT OF HAZEL GREEN. THE FIRST METHODIST SECT ORGANIZED IN HAZEL GREEN WAS THE METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN 1845. ALL GROUPS - ENGLISH, CORNISH AND AMERICAN BORN - ATTNEDED SERVICES UNTIL 1861. THAT YEAR, A GROUP SEPARATED THEMSELVES FROM THE METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH AND ESTABLISHED A PRIMITIVE METHODIST CHRUCH. (C). THE PRIMITIVE METHODISTS ARE AN EVANGELISTIC GROUP STARTED IN ENGLAND IN THE EARLY 1800'S. THE PRIMITIVE METHODISTS RECOGNIZE LAY LEADERSHIP WHEREAS THE EPISCOPAL METHODISTS DO NOT. THE MEMBERS OF THE HAZEL GREEN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH WHO WITHDREW TO ESTABLISH THE PRIMITIVE METHODIST CHRUCH WERE LARGELY CORNISH AND ENGLISH. THE SOCIETY PURCHASED A BUILDING AT THIS SITE TO HOLD SERVICES, AND A TORNADO, WHICH SWEPT THROUGH THE VILLAGE IN 1876, DESTRYED IT. THE NEXT FALL, THE CHURCH BUILDING WAS ERECTED TO REPLACE IT. (C) THE PRIMITIVE METHODISTS IN HAZEL GREEN DISBANDED IN THE 1970'S AND THE BUILDING WAS SOLD TO THE MASONIC LODGE. THE BUILDING NOW SERVES AS THE MASONIC LODGE HALL. (A).
