| Additional Information: | ARCHITECTURAL STATEMENT: THIS BRICK TWO STORY COMMERICAL STRUCTURE WITH A FLAT ROOF HAS A SCULPTURED PARAPET OR CORNICE WHITE STONE, COLORED STYLIZED SWAG DECROATION, A STRING COURSE THAT OUTLINES THE SCULPTURED PARAPET AND RUNS ACROSS THE FACADE AT CORNICE HEIGHT, AND SEGMENTAL ARCHED DOUBLE WINDOWS ACCENT THE STRUCTURE. THE SCULPTED PARAPET HAS BOTH NAME AND DATE STONES. THERE IS A BRICK ADDITION AT THE REAR. THE STORE FRONT HAS BEEN DRASTICALLY ALTERED FOR CONTEMPORARY USE. HISTORICAL STATEMENT: THE MARSHALL BUILDING IS HISTORICALLY ASSOCIATED WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF CUBA CITY'S COMMERICAL DISTRICT. WILLIAM MARSHALL HAD THIS BUILDING BUILT IN 1919 FOR HIS BUTCHER SHOP. THE BUILDING WAS LATER BOUGHT AND REMODELED FOR MOVIE THEATER PURPOSES BY GILBERT SKELDING AND HERRY KELLNER. THE MASON'S BOUGHT THE BUILDING IN 1932 FOR THIS MEETING HALL. IN 1934, IT BECAME KNOWN AS THE CUBA THEATER. THEY HAVE SINCE DISBANDED THE CUBA THEATER, WHICH CLOSED IN 1973. THE BUILDING NOW SERVES AS THE HEADQUARTERS OF SOUTHWESTERN REALTY INC. (C) 2025: The two-story Marshall Building, built in 1919, has a rectangular plan and the foundation is not visible. The exterior is clad in brick. The flat roof has an ornamented parapet, with stone inscriptions of “Marshall” in the central arch and “19” on the ends of the parapet, signifying the original owner, William Marshall, and the construction date of 1919. A stone stringcourse extends between the two date stones. The first story of the front (east) facade is clad in vertical wood board and batten and has two replacement, single-light, wood doors. A metal pent-roof awning is above the storefront. The second-story windows are replacement vinyl, one-over-one, hung sash units and feature stone sills and segmental brick arches. Alterations include the infilled storefront with replacement cladding and metal pent-roof awning, and replacement windows. William Marshall first operated a butcher shop out of the building. It has served various other uses throughout the twentieth century, including a meeting hall, movie theater, and realty office. It currently serves as an insurance company office. |
