NOTES
Additional Information:R. F. CONLON, BUILDER. ARCHITECTURAL STATEMENT: A SUBSTANTIAL MOULDED CONCRETE BLOCK TWO STORY HOUSE WITH A FLARED HIP ROOF THAT IS INTERSECTED BY PEDIMENTED GABLES AT THE FRONT AND REAR BY A GABLE PROJECTING OVER A THREE SIDED BAY ON THE SOUTH SIDE. CONCRETE SHORT CALSSICAL INSPIRED COLUMNS WITH IONIC CAPITALS IN CONCRETE ON MASONRY BASES SUPPORT THE TWO SIDED BALUSTRATED PORCH THAT HAS A ROUNDED CORNER AND A WINDOW IN THE FACADE THAT IS ROUNDED TO CORRESPOND TO THE ROUND PORCH CORNER. LEADED GLASS, A SMALL PEDIMENT AND COLUMNED TRIMMED WINDOW IN THE FRONT GABLE PEAK, A LUNNETTE WINDOW IN THE REAR GABLE, AND A WOODEN TWO-STORY REAR PORCH FURTHER CHARATERIZES THIS UNUSUAL HOUSE. THIS HOUSE IS ARCHITECTURALLY SIGNIFICANT BECAUSE IT IS AN ELABORATE REPRESENTATION OF THE TRANSITION BETWEEN HISTORIC STYLES AND MODERN TECHNOLOGY. ONE OF TWO CEMENT BLOCK HOUSES IN CUBA CITY, THIS HOUSE IS UNIQUE TO THE COMMUNITY OF CUBA CITY, AS WELL AS THE AREA. HISTORICAL STATEMENT: ST. ROSE PARISH HOUSE IS SIGNIFICANT TO THE RELIGIOUS DEVELOPMENT OF CUBA CITY. IT IS ALSO IMPORTANT AS AN EXAMPLE OF A TYPE OF BUILDING THAT A CATHOLIC PARISH WOULD BUILD FOR A PARTICUALR USE. ST. ROSE CATHOLIC CHURCH WAS A MISSION CHURCH ASSOCIATED WITH THE BENTON PARISH. FATHER SAMUEL MAZZUCHELLI, WHO FOUNDED MANY OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCHES IN SOUTHWESTERN WISCONSIN, ALSO ORGANIZED ST. ROSE CATHOLIC CHRUCH IN 1852. THE FIRST CHURCH STRUCTURE WAS BUILT IN THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF ST. ROSE CEMETERY, ABOUT ONE MILE NORTH OF CUBA CITY. IN 1894, THE PARISH MOVED TO CUBA CITY AND ERECTED A NEW CHRUCH. THE CHRUCH WAS SERVED BY THE BENTON PASTOR UNTIL 1908 WHEN CUBA CITY GOT THEIR OWN RESIDENT PASTOR. THE PARISH HOUSE WAS BUILT SOMETIME AFTER THAT, BETWEEN 1908 AND 1932, TO HOUSE THE PASTOR. THE HOUSE WAS BUILT WITH NUMEROUS ROOMS FOR WHEN THE BISHOP AND HIS ACCOMPANYING STAFF CAME TO VISIT AND STAY OVERNIGHT. CATHOLIC PARISHES OFTEN HAD LARGE PARISH HOUSES AND SHOULD BE RECOGNIZED FOR ITS INTENDED USE AND ANAMOLY TO A PARTICULAR RELIGIOUS SECT.
