HISTORICAL STATEMENT:
THIS HOUSE IS IMPORTANT TO CUBA CITY'S HISTORY BECAUSE OF ITS ASSOCIATION WITH E.G. DEUTMAN, SUPERINTENDENT OF THE VINEGAR HILL COMPANY ROASTER AND ZINK SEPARATING PLANT IN THE 1930S. DEUTMAN CAME TO CUBA CITY IN 1916. HE WAS THE VINEGAR HILL PLANT SUPERINTENDENT FROM THAT TIME THROUGH THE 1940S. THE VINEGAR HILL PLANT LOCATED SOUTH OF THE VILLAGE WAS ONE OF CUBA CITY'S MAJOR INDUSTRIES. THE PLANT SEPARTATED ZINC FROM THE ORE AND ROASTED IT TO PRODUCE SULFURIC ACID. IT OPERATED A FEW YEARS BEFORE WORLD WAR I THROUGH THE LATE 1940S. DEUTMAN HAD THIS HOUSE BUILT IN THE 1930S. George McQuade was a teacher in the community.
