NOTES
Additional Information:In 1938, Thomas E. Tallmadge, a prominent architect from Chicago who had apprenticed with Daniel Burnham, developed a master plan for the campus that drew on the classically inspired buildings representing the historic development of the college. Although the college never fully implemented Tallmadge’s plan, his vision promoted the architectural coherence of this attractive campus. Tallmadge's influence is best seen in the FD1.5 Harwood Memorial Union Building (northeast corner of Elm and Seward sts.), designed by Auler, Jensen, and Brown and completed in 1944. The Georgian Revival building rambles in a "Y" plan. Between the splayed wings, a colonnaded pavilion rises two stories in height, terminating in a tall square belvedere with a tent-roofed clock tower. A monumental portico with squared columns supports the plain entablature.
