Additional Information: | Originally surveyed 1993 - UNUSUAL PATTERN IN CONCRETE BLOCKS Re-Surveyed 2010 - The Mueller family has played an important role in the history of Sherwood. The first mention of the Mueller Family in local histories is 1881 when Henry Mueller established a cheese factory on the south side of Clifton Road (west of Military Road). Not much information exists about this early Mueller venture, but later, in 1916, Anton H. Mueller, presumably Henry's son, took over the operation of the well-established Sherwood Inn. Four years later, Anton helped establish the combination building housing the Sherwood Bank and the Sherwood Garage; as such, he became the bank's first president in 1914. Throughout this time, Anton continued in ownership of the Sherwood Inn, until 1916, when he sold to John Strebe. That same year, Anton Mueller built and operated his own company store, still at its present location and up until December 2010, it remained in the same family. After Anton passed in 1930, the store was operated by his son, Clarence, for most of the 1900s, until his death in 1997. The store then passed to Mary Jo and Tony Mueller, Clarence's children. In December 2010 it was announced that the family was selling the store to the Village of Sherwood. |
