At one time, Henry Clay Payne lived here. He was born in Franklin Co. Massachusetts on 11/23/1843 and came to Milwaukee in 1863. He was a developer of Milwaukee's trolley system. Was president of the Milwaukee Street Railway Co. from 1892-1895. Was president of the Milwaukee and Northern Railway Co. from 1890-1893. Was the Milwaukee Postmaster from 1872-1885. Was a Republican. Appointed Postmaster General of the United States by Theodore Roosevelt. Was a political organizer and lobbyist. He died 10/4/1904. Brown was born in Maine, moved to Cincinnati at age 16, studied law for four years and moved to Milwaukee in 1844. Was Wisconsin's first Attorney General, a member of Congress and Milwaukee's 11th mayor. No main building permit. |
