Bibliographic References:Pre-2017 information: A citation for the home's date of construction--which was previously noted as circa 1890--reportedly comes from the Glenwood City Tribune, 12/2/87. the house was also identified as the home of Sen. James H. Stout, presumably while his new house was being built on Broadway (there is, however, no citation for this belief). 2017: Following review of deeds and newspaper citations, the house is confirmed to have been built between 1884 and 1885 by Christian Overby, a jeweler. Overby purchased the lots in 1881. On 10 January 1885, a review of 1884 construction in the Dunn County News noted the house of C. Overby, brick house, unfinished, valued at $2,000. On 8 August 1885, the Dunn County News reported "C. Overby now Occupies his new residence on 5th Street. It is one of the finest in the city." Please note that before the street name changes, 9th Street was 5th Street. In April 1887, the house was signed over to wife Julia. The Overbys (or at least Christian) had, by this time, moved to Rice Lake, Wisconsin; however, they maintained ownership of the house until selling to Angeline Stout in October 1890. The Stouts owned the home until 1893, when they sold it to Peter Wilson (son of T.B. Wilson). Based on the dates of ownership by the Stouts, the story that this house was Sen. Stout's while his house was being built seems credible; however, of note, Stout was NOT elected Senator until 1895. Bio sketch for Christian Overby in 1922 History of Barron County, 261-62.
