Additional Information: | Beige brick long narrow structure serving as entrance to greenhouses; plain projecting cornice with corbelled brick band below; flat arched long windows and round arched door with radiating brick; brick base projects from structure below window sills; octagonal structure attached on west side with pedimented entrances and Tuscan column supports inside the structure, which has copper drainpipes and pediments over the entrance door. Gable-roofed brick structure with multi-paned arched windows and stone foundation also on grounds (94-35). Reminiscent of architecture by Sullivan and the Chicago School from the same period, the Oak Grove Greenhouse entrance and conservatory is a significant, unusual early representative of the new modern architecture in La Crosse. These buildings were extant in 1906, but a construction date cannot be determined because the Sanborn-Perris maps do not extend this far east until 1906. The Oak Grove Greenhouse was built in the 1890s. It represents an appendage to Oak Grove Cemetery and is also an example of commercial agriculture within an urban setting. |
