NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property under the name "Pilgrims' Congregational Church 2812 W. Wisconsin Ave." It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. First English service was held 7/1919. Last German service was held 12/1948. 2014- "Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church is large Neo-Gothic church first constructed in 1889 as a frame structure and designed by Milwaukee architect George Ferry. The church was redesigned in 1932 by Hugo Logemann and at that time was clad in lannon stone. The roof is clad in slate. It is a two-and-one-half-story church with a three-story steeple at the southeast corner of the building that houses the main entrance, with two wooden entrance doors on the south and east sides. Above each doorway is a pair of rectangular stained glass windows. Above that, carved into the limestone, is “Ev. Luth. St. Paul’s.” The east elevation has a large, pointed arch stained glass window, visible from West Wisconsin Avenue. A smaller, truncated pointed arch window is also featured on the north elevation. Aside from the pointed arch windows and heavy stone veneer, the church lacks the elaborate architectural decoration of the earlier Gothic Revival. A parish house and parsonage were added to the north side of the building between 1951 and 1952, also designed by Logemann. The addition largely matches the earlier design of the building, with similar subdued architectural ornamentation. Windows on the addition are generally one-over-one, double-hung sash with simple lintels. The original Ferry frame church was constructed for the Pilgrim Congregation Church in 1889 after it split with the Grand Avenue Congregation Church (2133 West Wisconsin Avenue, AHI No. 17809, listed in the National Register in 1986). In 1916, after rejoining Grand Avenue Congregation, Pilgrim Congregational sold the church to St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran. St. Paul’s Evangelical was organized in 1841 and is the oldest Lutheran congregation in Milwaukee. The first service was held in the new building in October 1917. Due to the small size of the original frame church, the congregation hired architect Hugo Logemann to redesign the church in 1932. At this time, Conrad Schmidtt also designed new stained glass windows. The church is still in use by the parish today." -"W Wisconsin Ave, 20th St-35th St", WisDOT #2190-00-00, Prepared by Mead & Hunt, Inc. (2014).
