NOTES
Additional Information:ARCHITECTURAL STATEMENT: This small frame residence on the northeast corner of State and Garfield Streets is a much altered version of the original dwelling (see photo collection of Eau Claire Landamrks Commission). The clapboard structure features intersecting gables, a boxed bay window, and a front entrance porch. The main facade is orientated to the West. This dwelling is in good condition. A garage and breezeway has been added to the north - back section of the house. The breezeway has a set of four double hung windows. The garage is hip roofed. There is a half circular window in the gable avove the twin garage doors. (See Bib. Ref. F). HISTORICAL STATEMENT: Edward Vallier, a traveling salesman, was the first occupant of this dwelling and was listed in the 1885 directory. A number of other owners occupied the home in the years up to 1923, when Ben Faast, who was responsible for the alteration which also occurred in 1923, purchased the property. Faast, a real estate broker for more than forty years, was general manager of the Northwestern Land and Mortgage Company. He was previously the vice-president of the Federal Land Bank of St. Paul, a member of the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents for Eighteen years, and president of the Wisconsin Colonization Company. The colonization company, in an attempt to settle the cutover region, planned and established a model town, Ojibwa, Wisconsin. The Ojibwa Courier Press Building, located in that community, is listed in the National register of Historic Places. Faast's papers are housed at the Area Research Center, UW-EC, and a master's thesis ("The Entrepreneurial Activities of Ben Faast" by Ronald Sandfort, 1974) chronicles Faast's career. Faast died in 1948. (See Bib. Ref. C, D, E). A more recent owner of this building was Mavis Lulloff in 1981.
