Additional Information: | According to one of the histories of the area, Alexander Malcolm purchased a home on this property in 1881. In subsequent years he "reconstructed the building, transforming it into a modern home" (A). Facing west on State Street, the Malcolm residence is characterized by clapboard and shingle siding, multiple gables, and bay windows. A veranda (a later addition) stretches across the main facade. Certificate of Appropriateness 1985: The roof on the south side addition has been changed from a flat roof to a hip roof. Alexander Malcolm, a logger, lived in this home from 1881 until c. 1897, the time of his death. Born in New Brunswick in 1851, Malcolm moved to Eau Claire in 1873. He first entered the employ of the Eau Claire Lumber Company, but in 1884, in partnership with E.S. Hammond, he entered the logging business. In 1887, following the dissolution of the partnership, Malcolm continued to log independeently. He was regularly providing five to eleven millioon feet of logs per year. |
