Additional Information: | A simple one and a half story frame (asphalt siding covers the original surface) structure which originally served as the office of the Daniel Shaw Lumber Co. The rectangular building has a stone foundation and an irregular roofline. The Daniel Shaw Lumber Co. was incorporated in 1874 with Daniel Shaw, native of Maine, as president. Shaw came to Eau Claire in 1856 and with his brother-in-law, Charles A. Bullen, (606 Third Avenue, 1L/31) entered the lumber business. In 1857 he erected a sawmill south of the outlet of Half Moon Lake. This mill burned in 1867 and was immediately replaced. In addition to the sawmill, Shaw operated the Cresent Mills, a large farm north of Eau Claire, and a store and boarding house for his employees. The area of Eau Claire in which the office, boarding house, and mill were located was, and still is, known as Shawtown -- a name which reflects the dominating influence of the company. The homes of both Shaw and Bullen were also located in this area. Following Shaw's death in 1881, the company was controlled by Bullen and Shaw's son, Eugene. The firm, one of the last operating in Eau Claire, ended production in 1912. |
