Additional Information: | This raceway at the outlet of Half Moon Lake allowed logs stored in the lake to re-enter the river or to be diverted to the Shaw Company sawmill (see diagram - 1897 map). Daniel Shaw, Adin Randall, and Jotham Clark (Clark would later sell his portion of the canal company to C.A. Bullen, Shaw's brother-in-law) completed the first canal linking the Chippewa River with Half Moon Lake in c. 1858. Lacking sufficient capital to continue the project, the partners incorporated as the Half Moon Lake Canal Company in 1859. Within ten years, the remaining canal, located at the outlet of the lake, was completed at a total expense of $35,000. Following these improvements, Half Moon Lake was recognized as the second largest log reservoir in western Wisconsin. |
