Additional Information: | The Lake Street Methodist Church, located at the corner of Lake Street and Fourth Avenue, is a brick structure in the Gothic manner. Basically cruciform in plan, the building is dominated by two towers, one a diminutive version of its counterpart. Also featured are a large pointed arch stained glass window and three pointed arch entrances. A brick educational building was added on the east side of the church in 1954. The first meeting of Methodists in the city of Eau Claire was held in 1857 by the Rev. William Darnell. Shortly following his visit, Darnell established the First Methodist Episcopal Church on Eau Claire's east side. Services were held at the Presbyterian Church and later at a school house on Lake Street. In 1860 a congregation on the west side of the Chippewa River was established and services held in a school building at the corner of Broadway and Fifth Avenue. A decade later a brick church, newly incorporated as the Lake Street Methodist Episcopal Church, was erected on the corner of Lake Street and Fourth Avenue. The Present structure was built in 1916. |
