Original cost $8500. 1921 brick garage 22x21. Wilhelm F. Wittstock, original occupant (1923-1957), president Wm. F.; Wittstock Incorporated, furrier (CD, Deeds 897:394) "Built in 1921, this well-appointed, brick bungalow was the work of carpenter-contractor William Hoffman. This house may have been based on one of his stock plans, as it closely resembles three other bungalows located between 5000 and 5600 West Washington Boulevard, two of which are known to have been built by Hoffman. While the exterior features interesting criss-cross, patterned brick, the interior is dominated by the extensive use of colored art glass featuring a stylized floral design. The interior remains largely intact and was recently featured in the magazine American Bungalow. The home's original owner, Wilhelm Wittstock was born in Germany in 1870 and immigrated to the United States at the age of twenty-three. He was married in 1895; however, his wife Bertha passed away in 1908. They had two children, Erwin and Clara, and in circa 1909, he remarried to Martha Kissling. Wilhelm worked as a furrier on North Avenue from 1908 until retiring in 1955, when he turned the business over to his unmarried son Erwin. Erwin passed away in January of 1957, while father Wilhelm died just five months later. The house was subsequently purchased by Rev. Ewald Plass, who was a noted authority on Martin Luther and had one of the most complete libraries on Luther."
