Additional Information: | ARCHITECTURAL STATEMENT: An International Style house located at the southwest corner of Garfield Avenue and Rust Street. The International Style, an outgrowth of European experiments in art and architecture, was an early twentieth century design type which heartily embraced the Machine Age. The stylistic characteristics include lightweight frame and curtain wall construction, open planning, standardized industrial materials, cubistic forms, a linear geometry, asymmetrical composition, flat roofs, smooth continuous wall surfaces, and the rejection of all applied ornament. (SEE BIB. REF. B). This residence includes many of the features listed above. The two story structure (plus attached garage) has a flat roof, a geometrical arrangement of openings, and little ornamentation. The smooth, continuous wall surface - here, wood shingles are used and because of the projecting areas at the roofline and between stories a band-like effect is evident - unifies the entire structure. The foundation is made of concrete and the roof is covered in asphalt shingles. The main facade is orientated to the North. This dwelling is in excellent condition. Dr. F. W. Thomas, the owner, designed and constructed the residence. (SEE BIB. REF. C). |
