Additional Information: | A Lustron Home - a house type developed after World War II and constructed of enameled steel panels. The house, which was assembled at the site, has a concrete slab foundation. The panels are held together with a special sealing strip and need little or no maintenance - including paint. The roof is of the same material. This particular Lustron Home also has a Lustron garage. The home was designedate an Eau Claire Landmark in recognition of its unique construction. Two other Lustron Homes are located in the city - 1831 Badger Avenue, 4P/32; 1819 Lyndale Avenue, 30/23. The Lustron Company was located in Columbus, Ohio. The Lustron Home, a structure constructed of enameled steel panels, was the brain-child of Carl Strandlund, a Swedish immigrant. Strandlund, who was the vice-president and general manager of the Chicago Vitreous Enamel Col., in Cicero, Illinois, received assistance from the federal government - a loan from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation - which enabled him to set up a factory to manufacture the panels. The first homes were produced in 1949 and demand for the economical and efficient dwelling, especially in the post-war era, was considerable. Unfortunately political considerations entered the situation (the government loan was called in early) forcing the company to close. (A) IT STILL HAS ITS ORIGINAL GARAGE. MRS. EMMA JULIN WAS THE WIDOW OF JOHN M. JULIN. 2016- "This is one of about 2,500 prefabricated houses manufactured between 1948 and 1950 by the Lustron Corporation of Columbus, Ohio. It was brought to Eau Claire and erected on a cement foundation and concrete slab according to company specifications. Its steel walls and roof have a baked enamel finish on the exterior and interior that make this home maintenance free. The permanent fireproof insulation and specially designed radiant panel heating system make the home inexpensive to heat. The Eau Claire area has four such houses, but only this one has a Lustron garage." -"Eau Claire Landmarks: Designated Historic Properties in Eau Claire, Wisconsin", Eau Claire Landmarks Commission, P.O. Box 5148, 2016. |
