Additional Information: | Attached garage. This structure contributes to the significance of the East College Avenue Residential Historic District under Criterion C as an example of an Arts and Crafts style cottage of exceptionally picturesque form. This little house illustrates how the vocabulary of the Arts and Crafts style could be used to give even a modest cottage a charmingly artistic appearance. 2005-This house was last surveyed in 1991 and no visible exterior changes have been made since that date. Although assessor's records note a 1910 date of construction; the house does appear on the 1886 Sanborn, with a porch along its entire north facade. By 1932, the porch is gone. Assessor's records note a 1927 date of alteration; that is likely when the porch was removed, the wooden shingles were applied and the garage addition built. According to city directories (1891-92), the first known owner/occupant of the home was Hiram G. Freeman, a cashier at the Commercial National Bank and secretary of the Fox River Paper Company. |
