Additional Information: | From "Appleton's Historic Old Third Ward Walking Tour" pamphlet, revised 2014 (www.focol.org/oldthirdward): "The Conkeys were among Appleton's first settlers, arriving in July 1849. Cynthia, a New Yorker, descended from Pilgrim stock and her maternal grandfather fought in the Revolution. When husband Theodore volunteered in the Civil War, she spent two summers with him in the field. She has been described as an omnivorous reader, artist and expert horsewoman. When widowed, Mrs. Conkey had the home built following a design of local architect Phillip Dean. Daughter Helen Barnes and her husband Lyman moved into the original Conkey mansion at 433 W Prospect."
