From "Appleton's Historic Old Third Ward Walking Tour" pamphlet, revised 2014 (www.focol.org/oldthirdward): "When built by Tintinger, these twin houses [414 (39308) and 416 (39307) S State] may have been Appleton's first duplex, joined together along a common back wall. In 1884 Andreas Kuhn, tailor, farmer and Civil War veteran, purchased the houses for retirement income. When the dwellings were sold separately in 1902, Grand Chute farmer John Hoh bought the south home and used the rental income to support his invalid daughter Helen. the houses were separated after 1913 to generate better rents, and, in 1926, Helen's sister Minnie Gehring acquired both. Though Minnie owned the homes for fifty years, she and Helen never lived there." |
