Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the State Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. This property is locally significant under Criterion C as an interesting example of an eclectic early 1900s institutional structure exhibiting Craftsman and Colonial Revival design influences. In many ways, this building symbolizes the conflict between the latent "modernism" of the period and historicism. The architect of this building could not make up his mind which way to go, so he did both. The sparse ornament, taut brick and stucco surfaces, unframed windows and broad roof planes betray the influence of the forward looking craftsman movement while the detailing of the large dormer and the front door are grand Georgian features intended to add a respectable period design touch. Additional map codes are: 11/8. |
