Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Additional map codes are: 9/3. A one-story with attic, painted brick, shed-roofed, early twentieth century commercial style structure with a modern plate glass and metal storefront shaded by a stationary barrel shaped awning. The upper facade features a band of seven, small, ornamental false windows set into the shaped brick parapet with its cast stone coping. Two foliated stone placques and a date placque further ornament inspread the parapet. This structure contributes to the architectural significance of the College Avenue Historic District under Criterion C as a fine example of a World War I era commercial building displaying a highly original facade treatment. The building is an excellent example of the non-historical design of the early twentieth century commercial style when architects employed abstract patterning and geometric parapet silhouettes to create economical yet eyecatching, commercial facades of striking originality. Although the storefront is modern, its large areas of plate glass are consistent with original design intent and complements the intact upper facade. 2024: Resurveyed. Not contributing to College Avenue Historic District. |
