In 1916 the boiler room and power plant were expanded to the west, with 70' x 54' and 60' x 24' additions respectively. Of particular note is the power plant addition which is almost a duplicate of the 1901 structure. The "rose" occulus from the 1901 plant was replaced in the western wall of the 1916 addition. In 1925 a coal pulverizer was added to the western wall of the boiler room. These additions--with the original plant--make up the existing facility. The 1901 plant was originally driven by two sets of flumes located laterally to the power plant. The 1916 addition required the removal of the westerly flume for plant expansion, at that time two verticle water wheels and four steam generators were installed, the water wheels continue to operate today. Coal fired generation was discontinued in 1954 in favor of gas. All steam generation was officially discontinued in 1970. The walls of the plant, with the exception of the coal pulverizing building, are finished in a coursed ashlor and rubble, river bottom limestone. The original plant has shed and gabled roofs with limestone cornice and cornice returns. |
