Additional Information: | Located behind brew house; partially built into hillside. Originally constructed of wood, the brick spring house constructed after the turn of the century is important as a contributing structure in the historic Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing complex. Established in 1867, the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company is the longest continually operating industry in Chippewa Falls. This spring house, originally built of wood in 1867, now reconstructed of brick, housed the spring which gave the brewery its original name, Leinenkugel and Miller's Spring Brewery Company. Subsequent brewery names are Leinenkugel's Spring Brewery and Jacob Leinekugel's Brewery Company. As part of the historic development of the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company, the longest continuously operating industry in Chippewa Falls, this building is an historically significant representative of the early industrial development of Chippewa Falls. Leineinkugel and Miller's Spring Brewery, as it was originally known, was one of four "primary processing" industries (beer, lumber, flour and woolen manufacture) which gave Chippewa Falls its earliest industrial base. This spring house, though altered from its original construction, was an integral part of the brewery's early operation and is the only extent structure representing the brewery's earliest period of development. RELATED BUILDINGS: Malt House (25/23); Stable (25/23); Brew House (25/22). 2021 - The Spring House (AHI 38853) was constructed into the hillside east of the brewery complex. This small windowless structure, originally wood, was reconstructed of brick sometime after 1900. It was not accessible at the time of the site visit, but reportedly remains in use, providing water for the brewing process. |
