Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the State Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. 2015: The Jacob Dix General Store and Post Office, constructed in 1854, is a one-and-one-half-story, front gable building and a one-story shed roof extension on the south (side) elevation. The log walls are clad in vinyl replacement siding and rest on a stone foundation covered in concrete. The gable roof is covered in asphalt shingles and the main block features cornice returns, vinyl fish-scale shingles, and a sunburst pattern in the gable end on the front (west) facade. The shed roof portion to the south has a Boomtown facade with a false parapet and dentilled cornice. The main entrance is centered on the front facade of the main block and consists of a replacement door flanked by small windows. A secondary entrance is located on the south (side) elevation, where a metal awning shelters a replacement door. A one-story gable wing extends on the rear (east) elevation and features returned cornices. Windows are one-over-one and six-over-six, double-hung, replacement sash in single and paired configurations, and those on the lower story have slightly peaked headers. A carriage barn at the rear of the property has been converted into a three-bay garage. The property was constructed as a general store and also served as Dheinsville’s post office. The post office was closed and the building was converted into a cheese factory by the 1890s; the property now serves as a two-family residence. |
