Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation-Public History. Intersecting hip roofs; dentil trim under eaves; front and south side roof dormers; flat concrete window heads with keystone accent over four elongated panes over clear plate glass windows; projecting cornice and frieze over entrance supported by Tuscan columns. Altered entrance door; north extension extends in front of main structure and has parapet and paired brackets under the eavees. Elevated foundation. Belt courses. Probably constructed during the later phase of the 20th century Neo-classical Revival period, the Standard Oil building is a significant strucuture that contiues to maintain integrity. One of the very few in the city to do so. 1996- "This large, two story, Italian Renaissance building has a red, barrel tile, hip roof and hip roof dormers. The building rests on a raised basement, and the main block's brick facade is highlighted by symmetrically set, four-over-one light windows topped with plain stone lintels with keystones. A north wing projects slightly westward but continues the same fenestration and detailing of the main block. Wide eaves shelter the dentiled and carved frieze. The entryway is classically framed with Tuscan columns supporting a plain entablature. Despite the installment of a few modern windows, the integrity of this, the historic Standard Oil Building, remains intact, rendering the structure a fine example of the Italian Renaissance style." - "La Crosse North/South Transportation Corridor", WisDOT ID #5991-04-00, Prepared by Heritage Research, Ltd. (1996). 2016 UPDATE - THIS BUILDING REMAINS SUBSTANTIALLY INTACT FROM WHEN IT WAS LAST SURVEYED IN 1996, DESPITE NEW DEVELOPMENT SURROUNDING IT. |
