Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation-Public History. Upper 5 stories: narrow three-bay facade divided by long capped brick piers; flat arched windows with white keystones; white trim and finials at the roof line. Lower 3 stories: divided from upper by projecting cornice; flat arched and round arched windows with white keystones in lower stories; projecting white cornice above altered store front; structure attached to 112 South 4th at the rear. Visually important as one of the tallest buildings in downtown La Crosse, the Hotel Linker exhibits the "Sullivanesque" ornament of the early modern period and is the best hotel structure remaining in downtown La Crosse. This fireproof building was built in two sections. The 1922 portion opened on to South Fourth Street, at 112 South Fourth, as a four-story building. The eight-story addition, built in 1925, runs perpendicular to the north of the original building along the alley. It opens at 318 Main with connections to 320 and 322 Main Street. In 1938, 320 served as a restaurant and 322 as a store. The brick buildings at 320 and 322 were built between 1891 and 1906. Additionally, the building at 324-330 Main is called the Linker Block in 1906. |
