Constructed in c. 1885, the John Torrance House, surrounded by a cast iron fence probably constructed at the Torrance Foundry is an example of the less elaborate but equally important interpretation of the Victorian Queen Anne style. Torrance first lived at the southwest corner of 8th and Cameron in 1873. Shortly thereafter he became the owner of the La Crosse Foundry. John Torrance established the La Crosse Foundry and Machine Works in 1876. Torrance was born in Scotland where he became a skilled artisan. The Torrance firm was important in the industrial development of the city.

General contractor: F. Drake and Sons.
