Additional Information: | Bracketed metal cornice with dentil trim and paneled freize; triangular pediment shaped flat stone window heads linked by stone belt courses; store fronts altered and some windows filled in. Although alteration has taken place, the eclectic Victorian Wannebo Building, used as the Matt Wannebo and E. William Elder Grocery Store, has retained a 19th century appearance that contributes to the architectural variety of the Caledonia Street commercial area. The building replaced several detached frame dwellings. The building is brick veneer, with a stone smoke house and a rendering house at the back of 1228-1230, suggesting that this was originally a meat market. Prior to opening the grocery in 1888, Mathias Wannebo was a millwright at the La Crosse Lumber Co. 2016 UPDATE - THE BUILDING LOOKS MUCH LIKE IT DID WHEN LAST SURVEYED IN 1996, WITH INTACT CORNICE, INTACT SECOND STORY, BUT STUCCOED FIRST STORY. A white stone belt course connecting the triangular shaped stone window heads characterizes the facade of the brick two story Wannebo brick block that is further ornamented by a bracketed dentil trimmed metal cornice generally associated with the commercial Italianate style popular when the building was constraucted in 1888. |
