Corbeled brick cornice with parapet above; nmame and date inscribed rectangular pediment in center of parapet framed bny pilasters; rpojecting arched 2nd story window heads with articulated keystones; black glass store front in graphic design and round widows in entrance doors. Constructed in 1878 by John Wlaters to house his sample room and ermodeled c.1940, the Casino Bar is the best remaining example of the 1930s Moderne styled storefront in the downtown commercial district of La Crosse. Constructed in 1878 for John Walter as a sampel orom the John Walter buildng has been used as a sample rooom or bar for most of its existance. Purchased by the John Gund Brewery in 1905, the business was known as the Buffet Bar until Prohibition. It was used for ladies furnishings etc. until after Prohibition c. 1933, when it became known as The Casino. It is now owned by Mrs. Betty Waldera. |
