Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation-Public History. Originally, this building was part of the Gund Brewery. Facade divided by brick piers into recessed bays; segmental arched windows with articulated stone and brick voussoirs with remainder of windows designed with straight, flat stone window lintels. Windows have been filled with glass block. Battlements and parapets further decorate the structure. Additions have been (one-story) to accomodate modern use. Although suffering some alteration of its architectural integrity, this structure along with the Gund Stable Building are the best preserved of the Gund Brewery complex. John Gund established the City Brewery with G. Heileman in 1858. Gund dissolved the partnership in 1872 and established the Empire Brewery. In 1897, fire consumed the establishment which was rebuilt in 1898 by architect C.F. Struck. Gund was very successful and his product was shipped troughout the Midwest. Gund was active in the German-American community in La Crosse and played an important role in municipal affairs. Heileman acquired Gund's brewery in 1920 with the onset of Prohibition and the retirement of John Gund. Related buildings: Racking House (2016 South Avenue); Malt House (2104 South Avenue); Gund Stables (2219 South Avenue); Gund Office Building (2111 South Avenue). Also 2126 South Avenue. |
