Additional Information: | Cluster of reinforced concrete grain elevators. Contrasting with the brick construction of the Cargill elevators across the street, these elevators are significant as an example of early modern reinforced concrete industrial construction in La Crosse. W.W. Cargill settled in La Crosse in 1875. He had a grain elevator constructed in Milwaukee Railroad Grounds north of the La Crosse River in 1880. The elevator burned in 1904 and the buildings here replaced it. Cargill's company became internationally important and still operates. La Crosse was a major center of grain milling and shipping between 1880 and 1900. |
