NOTES
Additional Information:Centrally placed entrance tower with a steeple rising from a multigabled belfry with pointed arch openings. Brick corbeling along eaves, gables and top of tower; stepped buttresses; pointed arch windows and door openings. Round window and triangular pediment above the door and arched windows are outlined in white stone. Only remaining stained glass window is the arched window in gable of facade. Windows in side elevations have been removed and filled with boards. The interior has been used as a gymnasium. Although the church interior has been demolished and the stained glass windows removed, the exterior architectural details of the structure remain. St. John's is the best and one of the few representatives of NeoGothic church architecture remaining in La Crosse. Congregation established by the Northside German Catholics of St. Joseph's Cathedral. St. John's combined with St. James in 1968 and the church was vacated. The cornerstone was removed to St. James in 1976. The Boys Club recently moved from the structure. Related buildings: Rectory (826 Avon St.); School (818 St. James St.).
