| Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. In 1881, Joseph Duvall, a leading merchant and grain elevator operator, built the neighborhood's first mansion, a cream brick Italianate edifice with pedimented gables and octagonal bay windows. The front porch was replaced and a side porch converted into a sunroom, probably in the 1910s or 1920s. Today the building serves as a bed-and-breakfast inn. Joseph Duvall had come from Canada in 1852 and worked as a timber foreman in a firm owned by George Grimmer. Duvall soon joined Grimmer's firm as a partner and, when it dissolved, took over the company's store and developed it into a substantial enterprise. He engaged in other business enterprises including a grain elevator and Lake Michigan shipping line. Joseph Duvall lived in this house until his death in 1912 when his son George, also a prominent businessman, moved in with his wife Maude. George lived here until his own death in 1963. George and Maude Duvall previously lived at 1017 Milwaukee St. (AHI #26621). |
