Additional Information: | Facade divided vertically by two projecting rectangular bays on on north end while the other is placed two bays from the south end and a central entrance bay with chamfered corners and pressed concrete entrance with round arched portal; round arched windows on first story and top story. Remainder are flat arched windows; parapet with blind round arches in projecting bays top the large structure. Concrete belt courses divide surface horizontally. One of the few hospital structures in the city to have maintained architectural integrity, St. Anne's is an important example of scaled down late historic institutional architecture in La Crosse. This structure is the only hosptial structure connected with St. Francis hospital to have architectural integrity. Alverna Hall, attached to the home at the west side, was originally called St. Ann's Orphan Asylum. Sienna Hall at 608 South 11th Street originally was the bishop's house; the gymnasium at the northwest corner of the house originally was the Bishop's Chapel. Demonstrates continuing nature of La Crosse as a center of Catholic institution. Maternity hospital built to accommodate 75 patients. Building was constructed by local contractor Peter Nelson and Son. 2017 UPDATE - THIS BUILDING LOOKS SUBSTANTIALLY LIKE IT DID WHEN LAST SURVEYED IN 1996. |
