Additional Information: | Square four stage north tower and shorter round tower with rectangular base flank the facade; facade raticulated by pediment in gable end with smaller gable visually supported by pairted applied pilasters and round arched niches; thre round arched portals; side elevations broken by arcade resting on capped pilasters with round arched windows in the bays; hip roofed apsidal west end; gable roofed transept ornamented by corbelled brick panels and large arched stained glass window; small rear addition. Organized to accommodate the influx of German immigrants, when Notre Dame Church could no longer provide for the increasing numbers in 1884, St. Charle Borromeo Catholic Church designed in a very eclectic style has been sanblasted, which has diminished the architectural significance of the structure. Construction of St. Charles Church was begu in 1884 and completed in 1885 through the assistance of Father C.F.X. Goldsmith. St. Charles was the first church to provide a German language service in Chippewa Falsl, a practice which was continued well into the twentieth century.(A) In 1934 the bulding was rewired, reglassed and a new tile floor was laide in the vestibule.(B) In 1941 the inside of the church was completely renovated, including emoval of the original alters donated by Chippewa Falls businessman Jacob Leinenkugel. This church building is of importance though not significant historical interest to the City of Chippewa Falls because of its association with the City's ethnic heritage. #650: St. Charles Convent (39-17); St. Charles School (39-21); St. Charles Rectory (39-20). |
