Additional Information: | Intersecting gable roofs; flat, straight stone lintels over one over one windows; stone sills; full length front frame enclosed porch with side entrance on concrete block foundation; has been altered, half round window in north gable. A small stone cottage of rather small cut stones constructed before 1867 in the vernacular tradition with a gable roof, simple rectangular windows with stone window lintels and sills. The structure owned by C. Burkhardt, who operated a cooperage on the premises in 1868, has been added to and altered at various times. Although altered and deteriorating conditions exist, the Burkhardt House is the best extant example of the stone cottages that once were common in La Crosse. Jacob Burkhardt was a cooper. There is nothing much known of him. He would have passed into history unnoticed if his house and shop had not survived. Burkhardt probably produced items for the breweries both located near his home. |
