Additional Information: | Free standing structure brick surface articulated by brick piers topped by a pediment accented parapet above the decorative brick cornice that extends around the south and east facades; round arched window heads ornamented with brick tracery or mouldings on the upper floor ad flat arched windows on the lower floor. Store front has bee altered and the south store front has been filled in although the iron elements have remained. Although the store front has been altered completely and the east front has filled in, the J. Koller Building, constructed in 1898 for use as Koller's grocery store, saloon, and residence, is one of the few commercial structures in La Crosse to have retained a cast iron store front, which is located on the south elevation of the building. John Kohler was 13th Ward alderman in 1897 when he ran his grocery at 629 S. Third. He moved to 628 S Fourth Street (essentially, to the lot directly behind his previous business and residence) the following year. Straight; flat stone window lintels; gabled door hood with modern iron supports. 2017 UPDATE - BUILDING APPEARS SUBSTANTIALLY AS IT DID WHEN LAST SURVEYED IN 1996. |
