NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Seven bay, four story structure with central five story tower and center structures; corbeled brick cornice with parapet above; flat arched windows with brick tracery and stone keystone ornamental window heads. Brick piers divide brick surface and border projecting five story entrance with large round arched portal accented by articulated brick and "stone" voussoirs and with long narrow full length window bays; C & J. Michel plaque above entrance to drive through passage through center of structure; three and four story rear addition; tall smokestack at extreme N.W. end of structure. North end has been altered for retail use. Retaining good architectural integrity through the years, the Michel Brewery is the best preserved architectural example of a historic brewery remaining in La Crosse. This building replaced several one and two story wood storage buildings c. 1910. The original brewery was across the street at 737 South Third. The Michel Brewery was one of La Crosse's most important. There were 3 large and important breweries in 19th century La Crosse. These included Heilemans, Gunds, and Michels. All had a regional clientele. All were hurt by Prohibition. Heileman eventually acquired them. Local Historic Designation by Historic Sites Commission rescinded by City Council because of economic hardship in Fall of 1995. Owner demolished the building. Fifth floor addition constructed by local contractor Frank Schwalbe in 1935.
