Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the State Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. This is a 1 1/2-story gabled ell brick house with stone foundation. A one-story wing has been appended to the east wall. The porch at the ell has been enclosed. The house is distinctive for its polychrome brickwork. Three decorative stringcourses of red brick - one above the foundation, one bisecting the first story, and one marking the attic story, visually unite the wings of the house. Patterned red brick marks the corners and wall edges as well as the gable ends. Window and door openings are accented by patterned red brick and beneath each window is a panel of checkered red and cream brick. The house was probably built around 1900 by Frank Ruelle, a French-Canadian immigrant and pioneer settler of Lena. It is a fine example of a locally unique, pioneer-era, vernacular house exhibiting exceptional ornamental detailing. |
