NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. THIS GOTHIC REVIVAL CHURCH WAS BUILT IN 1892. (SEE BIB. REF. A). Original cost of construction was just over $22,000. IT FEATURES A RECTANGULAR SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, A REGULAR STONE FOUNDATION, AN asbestos SIDED EXTERIOR, WOOD TRIM AND A SHINGLED, GABLE ROOF. THE SIDING WAS USED TO COVER THE FORMERLY stuccoed EXTERIOR WALLS. SEGMENTALLY ARCHED OPENINGS DISTINGUISH THE WINDOWS AND ENTRANCES THROUGHOUT THE STRUCTURE. EMBELLISHING SELECT WINDOWS ARE STAINED GLASS, WHICH HAS REMAINED INTACT OVER THE YEARS, AND GOTHIC TRACERY. ALTHOUGH THE spire and turrets were removed in 1912 and stucco applied over the clapboards in 1921, THE CHURCH STRUCTURE AS A WHOLE IS IN GOOD CONDITION. The asbestos siding was added in 1949. [E] THIS BUILDING WAS KNOWN HISTORICALLY AS THE PRIMITIVE METHODIST CHURCH AND AS THE FIRST CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH in 1913. The congregation became affiliated with the United Church of Christ in 1961. The Primitive Methodist Church formed in Mineral Point in 1848 when 70 members left the Methodist Episcopal Church. They worshipped in various houses around town until their first church was constructed in 1849. The congregation had grown to 425 members by 1892 so a new church was needed. RELIGIOUS SERVICES HAVE BEEN CONDUCTED AT THIS SITE FROM 1892 TO THE PRESENT DAY. (SEE BIB. REF. A).
