A BRICK, TWO-STORY STRUCTURE WITH A FLAT SLOPING ROOF THAT HAS HAD ALL HISTORIC DETAIL ELIMINATED FROM THE FACADE WHEN THE STUCCOED SURFACE WAS APPLIED. THIS BUILDING IS HISTORICALLY RELATED TO THE SOCIAL, GOVERNMENTAL, AND COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT OF 20TH CENTURY DARLINGTON. BUILT BETWEEN 1908 AND 1915, THIS BUILDING WAS ORIGINALLY OCCUPIED BY THE U.S. POST OFFICE OF DARLINGTON.(A,B) THE POST OFFICE REMAINED IN THIS BUILDING FOR OVER 50 YEARS. A NEW POST OFFICE BUILDING WAS ERECTED IN 1965 AND WAS MOVED.(C) DURING THE 19TH CENTURY THE POST OFFICE MOVED TO SEVERAL LOCATIONS DURING ITS EXISTENCE. IT WAS LOCATED AT THE DRIVER MERCANTILE STORE ON LOWER MAIN STREET, AND ABOUT 1900 ACROSS THE STREET IN THE EYE CARE CENTER BUILDING. |
