Additional Information:A STONE TWO-STORY STRUCTURE WITH A FLAT SLOPING ROOF THAT HAS BEEN COMPLETELY STRIPPED OF ALL HISTORIC DETAIL. ORIGINALLY KNOWN AS THE NEWCOMB AND WADDINGTON STORE, THIS BUILDING WAS HISTORICALLY RELATED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF DARLINGTON'S COMMERCIAL DISTRICT. HISTORICALLY THIS BUILDING WAS CALLED THE NEWCOMB AND WADDINGTON STORE, AND WAS BUILT PRIOR TO 1884. IT WAS A GENERAL STORE.(C) IN 1880, JOHN H. HOCKING BROUGHT THIS STONE STRUCTURE AND MOVED HIS GENERAL MERCHANDISE BUSINESS INTO THE BUILDING.(C) HOCKING HAD BEEN ENGAGED IN THE MERCANTILE BUSINESS IN DARLINGTON SINCE 1862, LOCATED IN ANOTHER BUILDING.(F) HE CARRIED OUT HIS GENERAL MERCHANDISE BUSINESS IN THIS BUILDING FOR ANOTHER 25 TO 30 YEARS.(B,D) BY 1901, THE STORE HAD CHANGED HANDS AND WAS KNOWN AS THE JOHN MACKEN MEAT MARKET. MACKEN CONTINUED HIS MEAT BUSINESS UNTIL ABOUT 1920.(B,E)
