Additional Information: | Fine well detailed example of the style whose most prominent feature is a superb three-story-tall bow window on the east facing facade is a fine exampole of Adams/Regency style design. The first floor is taller than the rest and has a fine 9/9 lite flat-arched windows with keystone lintels having concrete keystones. A wide concrete belt course encircles the building above and acts as a sill for the second floor windows. All second and third floor windows are 6/6 lite and have keystoned lintels, too. The main entrance door is placed on the north facing facade and has a superb classical surround made of concrete having plain pilasters supporting the segmental arched curved pediment above. The entrance door has a fine fan light above. The entrance is now obscured by the projecting rectilinear brick three-story-tall elevator shaft to the left, which is a modern addition. The one-story-tall roofed ell to the right of the entrance is original. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The St. Mary's Nurses Home was built in 1927 and was the nurses' residence and training school for St. Mary's Hospital, which was established in Green Bay by the Sisters of Miseracordia in 1900. The original purpose of the institution was "for destitute mothers" and their children.f St. Mary's later became a full-fledged hospital facility. It was moved to the west side and new quarters in the 1950's. The building now serves as a nursing home. Green Bay Intensive Survey Phases 2, 3 & 4 |
